Midland Hockey Indoor Qualifiers for National Indoor League

It was a very close run game against Cannock, the team currently top of the National outdoor league, to deny Coventry & North Warwicks a place in the National Indoor League. Cannock won 3-2 in the semi-finals of the event at Cocks Moors centre to go through.
In their league C&NW were up against Harborne in an early 9.00am start and lost that game 2-4 despite two goals from skipper for the day Ben Clarke which brought them level at 2-2 until two late goals from Harborne.
After that the Coventry team found their feet and comfortably beat Wolverhampton 2-0 with two goals from Gus Grieve. Worcester were the next victims with a 4-0 scoreline, the goals being shared between Nick Olding, Sean Whitehouse, Gus Grieve and guest for the day Sam Clarke.
The next game was against National League Belper for a place in the semi-final and Coventry stormed into a 4-0 lead within 10 minutes, Whitehouse scoring two and Ben Clarke the other two. Although Belper responded with two late goals it was too late to prevent the Coventry squad from advancing to the vital match against the hitherto invincible Cannock.
In the other semi-final Leek had beaten Harborne 3-2 so the final should have been between Leek and the winners of the Cannock/C&NW game but Leek announced that they did not wish to take part in the National League. So it was decided that there would be no final but instead the winners of the other semi-final would proceed to the National phase.
So it was all to play for at 6.00pm, after a long day for C&NW. Cannock scored in the first minute but Stuart Colegate was on hand to pop in the equaliser.
Elliot Rider was in form in goal to prevent further scores until conceding half way through. Another goal from another short corner with two minutes left gave Cannock some breathing space and they were able to deny the underdogs until a flurry of short corners at the end provided another goal to make it 3-2 but there was not enough time for the equaliser.
A good day for the 8 man C&NW outfit which had warmed to the task as the day progressed.
