Coventry Boys Triumph in Midland Championships
| 5/5/2010 - Latest News |  | Drawn in the same group as National League giants Cannock and Stourport it seemed an uphill task just to qualify through the group stages, however the Coventry youngsters grit and determination carried them through beating Cannock 1-0 with a Ford Collins goal and then booking a quarter final place with a 2-0 win over Stourport thanks to Collins and Rory Kenney Herbert combining twice to grab a goal a piece. A hard fought Quarter Final against Burton saw Collins net again and that was enough to go through mainly due to the resilience of Monty Dosanj and Jonathon Leong in Defense and the flawless Aiden Johnson in goal. The semi final against previous winners Beeston proved every bit as tough as it was expected to be Dan Williams Tom Betts and captain Kenney Herbert worked tirelessly in midfield and Johnson made several top class saves to take the semi to penalties. Kenney Herbert and Leong calmly scored from the spot and once again Johnson proved his worth saving the first two Beeston penalties to book the cov boys a final place. Facing Sutton in the final the young Coventry lads had to dig deep and once again Williams, Kenney Herbert and Betts worked tirelessly to break down the Sutton attacks, Leong Dosanj and Johnson kept their fifth clean sheet of the day while Collins came close on two occasions. 0-0 at full time brought penalties and skipper Kenney Herbert and Jonathon Leong slotted home again to make it 2-2 on penalties with one each remaining. Dan Williams stepped up to the mark and rolled his penalty into the corner to make it 3-2 and once again Aiden Johnson won the game saving the 3rd Sutton penalty to win the championships and book a place in the national finals in two weeks time. In a very hard fought tournament five clean sheets and exceptional calmness under pressure was what separated the cov youngsters from the rest.
